Before you start
You can search the map for an area in England. It shows the estimated area at risk from coastal erosion for 2 time periods:
- medium term - until 2055
- long term - until 2105
The map shows the risk of coastal erosion in the following 2 ways:
- if there was no future work to maintain or build coastal defences
- if the current plans to manage the coastline - known as ‘Shoreline Management Plans’ - are followed
Each Shoreline Management Plan includes one of the following 4 different ways of managing coastal erosion:
- no active intervention - maintaining or supporting a more natural coastline
- hold the line - protection against flooding and erosion is maintained or upgraded to keep the shoreline in broadly the same place
- managed realignment - the position of the shoreline is changed in a controlled way, for example by slowing erosion or creating areas of habitat to help manage flooding
- advance the line - new defences are built to extend the land area out to sea
