Role of appropriate bodies

Appropriate bodies assure the quality of statutory teacher induction. They assure themselves that:

• relevant people know of their responsibilities for monitoring support and assessment during teacher induction, and are capable of meeting them
• monitoring, support, assessment and guidance procedures in place are fair and appropriate

Appropriate bodies also provide data to the Teaching Regulation Agency. This is to record the progress of people who start, and complete, induction.

Who appropriate bodies are

The following organisations can act as appropriate bodies:

• teaching school hubs
• Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel, for their members and associate or additional members only
• Educational Success Partners, for British schools overseas

Teaching school hubs are now the main provider of appropriate body services, except for the 2 specialist appropriate body services for some independent and overseas schools.

Local authorities no longer provide appropriate body services.

How to choose an appropriate body

Schools are encouraged to choose their local teaching school hub for appropriate body services,Ìýunless they have specific reasons to access these services from another appropriate body.

Registration with an appropriate body is a separate process to signing up for Department for Education funded training based on the early career framework. All early career teachers must be registered with an appropriate body before they begin induction.

You can use this guidance to find an appropriate body if you’re responsible for statutory induction in a school, college or other organisation where teachers may serve induction.
